GO AQS and IAQS Announce Strategic Partnership to Advance Indoor Air Quality Standards Across Europe

GO AQS and IAQS Announce Strategic Partnership to Advance Indoor Air Quality Standards Across Europe | Collaboration aims to strengthen indoor air quality governance, support public health, and enhance societal and economic resilience

The Global Open Air Quality Standards (GO AQS) and the European Indoor Air Quality Society (IAQS) are pleased to announce a strategic partnership dedicated to advancing indoor air quality (IAQ) standards and governance across Europe. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to promoting healthier, safer, and more productive indoor environments through science-based standards, knowledge exchange, and stakeholder engagement.

As Europeans spend the vast majority of their time indoors, indoor air quality has emerged as a critical factor influencing public health, well-being, learning outcomes, and workplace productivity. Through this partnership, GO AQS and IAQS will work together to support the development and implementation of robust IAQ frameworks that help improve building performance and protect occupants across residential, educational, commercial, and public spaces.

The partnership will facilitate collaboration among researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and practitioners to advance best practices and encourage the adoption of effective indoor air quality standards throughout Europe and beyond.

Sotirios Papathanasiou, Founder of GO AQS said:

“The partnership between the Global Open Air Quality Standards (GO AQS) and the European Indoor Air Quality Society (IAQS) is a commitment to shifting the paradigm of how we govern the air we breathe indoors. We must recognize that the air within our buildings is a fundamental driver of national success. Beyond the vital protection of public health and well-being, good indoor air quality is a catalyst for socioeconomic growth. By ensuring our indoor environments meet rigorous standards, we are directly enhancing the cognitive performance and productivity of our citizens. This partnership is about more than safety; it is about providing European countries with the structural framework to foster a healthier, more competitive, and more prosperous society.”

By combining their expertise and networks, GO AQS and IAQS aim to raise awareness of indoor air quality as a strategic societal priority while supporting evidence-based policymaking and practical implementation measures. The partnership aligns with broader European ambitions to create sustainable, resilient, and people-centred built environments.

As awareness grows around the impact of indoor environments on health and economic performance, the two organisations believe that stronger collaboration and harmonised approaches will be essential to ensuring that indoor air quality receives the attention it deserves as a cornerstone of future-ready buildings and communities.

Marianne Kemmer, executive director said: “Indoor air quality is one of the most significant yet under-recognised determinants of public health, learning, and productivity. Through this partnership, IAQS and GO AQS are joining forces to ensure that indoor air quality becomes a strategic priority for policymakers, building professionals, and society as a whole. Together, we aim to support a future where healthy indoor environments are the norm, not the exception, contributing to a more sustainable, competitive, and resilient Europe.”
