IAQS at the Geneval Health Forum | Indoor Air Quality in Healthcare Facilities

Good indoor air quality is a fundamental health determinant for hospitals, care homes, clinics and outpatient centres, and a key priority for primary prevention within the Italian National Health Service. This conference, co-organised by the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) and the Geneva Health Forum (GHF), is the third edition of the European cycle on indoor air quality launched in 2023, focusing on healthcare facilities and on the role of indoor air quality in promoting health of patients, visitors and healthcare workers.

The event brings together researchers, engineers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and several other professional profiles whose priorities and language do not always align but whose collaboration to improve indoor air quality within healthcare facilities is essential. The morning session takes a policy-focused approach, opening with keynote addresses, including the presentation of Italy’s National Plan on Clean Air, followed by an expert panel with leading Italian and international stakeholders, among them the World Health Organization and the Panamerican Health Organisation. Scientific contributions on the currently available evidence and real-world examples of challenges and best practices in healthcare settings complement the policy discussions. In the afternoon, thematic roundtables will turn scientific evidence and policy considerations into concrete, actionable implementation.

OBJECTIVES

  • Exchange real-life experiences and foster dialogue between researchers and stakeholders
  • Raise awareness of the importance of indoor air quality in hospitals and other health facilities
  • Develop concrete actions to improve indoor air quality and safeguard the health of patients, healthcare professionals and caregivers

Indoor Air Quality in Healthcare Facilities

The conference Indoor Air Quality in Healthcare facilities is part of the European Conferences on Indoor Air Quality cycle, co-organized by the Geneva Health Forum (GHF) and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS).

How can operational aspects, building design, human resources (patients and healthcare workers) and monitoring work together to improve IAQ? To explore this question, the conference will feature four thematic roundtables built around awareness, collaboration and health promotion, with the aim of improving indoor air quality in healthcare facilities through collective effort. Each roundtable will be led by high-level experts in the field, with a multidisciplinary audience to bring in different perspectives and turn shared reflection into concrete action.
